Nurtured by Nature: Nature as Therapy

Nature Therapy, also commonly referred to as eco therapy, horticultural therapy, or ecopsychology is based on the ideas that individuals are connected to and impacted by the natural environment and engaging with it can improve wellbeing. Being in nature can be healing and grounding and can facilitate a greater connection to the self, others, and the world around us. We believe that connection to nature is an integral aspect to supporting our health, wellbeing, and living harmoniously. Being present and living with conscious awareness of our deep connection with what exists in our world is something we see as deeply important.

Modern lifestyles can disconnect us from our natural environment and what is even more staggering is that some estimates that have emerged from research show that humans can spend around 90% of their lives indoors. Thankfully, there can be beneficial effects to be had from both direct and indirect contact with nature.

There is continual emerging research detailing the positive benefits of connecting with nature. Some include:
- Improving our health, including our emotional, mental, social, and physical health
- Relieving symptoms and feelings of  anxiety, depression, and stress
- Enhancing connection with the world around us
- Building connection and a sense of community
- Creating a sense of meaning and purpose in life
- Assisting with emotional regulation
- Reducing social isolation and feelings of loneliness
- Improving attention and focus
- Boosting confidence and self-esteem

When we connect or reconnect with nature, this can offer our lives more meaning.

Offering nature based interventions at Bloom and Grow Therapy is a privilege, as we are able to share our connection and passion for nature with others.  When we are connected, to ourselves, others, and nature, this increases our ability to thrive and live more meaningfully.

Nature Based Therapy at Bloom and Grow Therapy is based on the needs of each person but may involve walk and talk therapy, certain evidenced based interventions like mindfulness, relaxation strategies, and psychoeducation, as well as creative and expressive practices such as eco art therapy, therapeutic horticulture and nature based activities, and journaling.
